Gratien Gélinas

Project

A biographical exhibition on the artistic career of Gratien Gélinas.

Location

Kateri Tekakwitha Chapel, Oka, Quebec

Role

Design and production

As the “grandfather” of Quebec cinema, Gratien Gélinas occupies a unique place in Canada’s cultural history. His quintessentially Quebecois characters, his resounding successes, and his relentless efforts to establish a national dramatic tradition for Quebec have made him a major creative force and a true pioneer.

His gift for comedy led him to write a radio series that propelled his main character, Fridolin, into the pantheon of celebrities. This creator, endowed with extraordinary energy, became the first major star of the Quebec stage. Spurred by this success, he wrote and produced the series of nine major musical revues, the Fridolinades, between 1938 and 1946.

In the late 1940s, he harbored the ambition to write a play, which would become Tit-Coq, the first truly French-Canadian play to stand the test of time. This was followed by Bousille et les justes, which he considered his best play, as well as the decidedly modern Hier, les enfants dansaient.

After helping to foster the growth of the film industry in Canada by contributing to the founding of Telefilm Canada, Gélinas rediscovered his passion for writing a play, La Passion de Narcisse Mondou, which would be his last, as he passed away in 1999.

His plays and productions are regularly staged by contemporary theater companies, and many students study his works in school. A fascinating creator known for his complexity and profound humanity, a gifted director, and a leading playwright, Gratien Gélinas is one of the country’s leading figures in the arts.
