Onkwehon:we

Exhibition

Photography, Kanien'kéha culture

Date

Summer 2022

Role

Supporting a group of young women from the Kanehsatake community in creating an exhibition on Kanien'kéha art and culture.

In the summer of 2022, I invited the neighboring community of Kanehsatake to take ownership of the outdoor exhibition, retaining only a role as a facilitator and technical support.

Thus was born the Onkwehon:we exhibition. A collaboration between the Kanehsatake Council and Tsi Ronterihwanonhnha ne Kanien’kéha, the Kanehsatake Language and Culture Centre.

The trilingual exhibition (Kanien’kéha, French, and English) highlighted traditional craft practices and addressed painful topics such as residential schools and missing Indigenous women. Significant emphasis was placed on the revival of the Kanien’kéha language in the context of the UN’s declaration of the Decade of Indigenous Languages in 2022.
