Mail Art is a true breath of freedom that transcends the conventions of traditional letter-writing. It appeals to people through its accessibility and apparent simplicity. It is an organic movement that grows and evolves through the ongoing exchange between artists and enthusiasts. Many visual artists, poets, and writers have practiced it since the 19th century. From the Dada group to Fluxus, Mail Art has served as social commentary, coded messages, or elaborate narratives.
This exhibition celebrates three decades of creative collaboration between the Portuguese artist Carlos Barroco and the Canadian artist Paul St-Jean.
Paul St-Jean’s mail art is characterized by its ability to weave revealing narratives around contemporary events, whether of a personal nature or stemming from unique observations of his surroundings. By incorporating everyday elements such as advertisements and product labels, he creates a dynamic interaction between visual content and narrative. Images and forms intertwine with handwritten addresses, pictograms, and typical postal elements, such as stamps and postmarks. Taken to the extreme, these elements become a canvas for panoramic expression. St-Jean uses various techniques, including painting, photography, collage, and drawing, to enrich his compositions and provoke reflection on everyday life.
